Amid the nationwide protests by doctors following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, a resident doctor at LG Hospital in Maninagar was allegedly assaulted on Sunday.

Dr. Ravi Chaudhary, 26, a second-year MD student residing in the PG boys’ hostel on the hospital grounds, lodged a complaint with Maninagar police. He alleged that he was attacked by a patient’s son and his friend after he objected to them filming in the casualty ward.

According to the complaint, Chaudhary was on duty in the casualty ward early Sunday morning when a patient, who had allegedly ingested poison, was brought in by his son and a friend.

As Chaudhary began administering the necessary procedures, he informed them that the case needed to be registered with the hospital and treated as a medico-legal case. Dr. Hiral Gardi, another doctor on duty, inquired about the specific poison to determine the appropriate treatment.

At this point, the friend of the patient’s son started recording the scene on his phone.

When Chaudhary asked him to stop, both men allegedly began verbally abusing and physically assaulting him.

The friend reportedly attempted to strangle Chaudhary, who was saved by a security guard. The attackers also allegedly threatened further harm.

The accused have been charged under Sections 121 (voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant), 224 (threat of injury to a public servant), and 54 (abetment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
