In a major spike in daily Covid cases, infections nearly doubled in the city and state on Wednesday. Compared to 106 cases on Tuesday, Wednesday saw 207 cases in Ahmedabad, a rise of 95%.

For Gujarat, the number was 80% with cases going from 226 to 407.

In the past four months, it's the biggest single-day spike in the Covid cases, confirmed the state health department officials. In fact, for Ahmedabad, it was a 125-day high daily figure, and for Gujarat it was 123-day high.

Manoj Aggarwal, ACS (health), told sources that they have increased surveillance in cities like Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara.

The city's daily Covid tally nearly doubled in 24 hours as it registered 207 new cases on Wednesday, the highest in 125 days, and accounted for nearly half of 407 new cases in Gujarat.

On Tuesday, the city had recorded 106 cases. According to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), 16 patients have been hospitalized. With the discharge of 92 patients, the active cases in the city reached 903.

Other cases included 45 in Surat city, 39 in Vadodara city, 17 in Rajkot city, 12 in Surat, 11 in Bhavnagar city, and 10 in Gandhinagar city among others.

Out of 33 districts of Gujarat, nine have zero active cases. With the discharge of 190 patients, Gujarat now has 1,741 active cases. Four patients were on ventilators.

Manoj Aggarwal, ACS (health), said that steps are being taken to check the rise in Covid cases. "Covid surveillance systems are in place in cities like Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara.

All the active cases are being monitored in terms of symptoms, travel history, hospitalization and contact history.

There's no major shift in trend. Even today, most patients have flu-like symptoms and around 5-7% of them require hospitalization," he said.
