Controversy in Jamnagar Over PMAY Flat Allotted to BJP MLA’s Son

A flat allotted under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme in Dhrol Municipality has sparked public outrage after it was revealed that the beneficiary is Mohit Chavda, the son of Meghji Chavda, a sitting BJP MLA from Kalavad in Jamnagar district.

The PMAY scheme, intended to provide affordable housing to economically weaker sections (EWS) and low-income groups (LIG), is now under scrutiny after documents surfaced showing the allotment of a unit to the MLA’s son—despite the family reportedly owning 50 acres of agricultural land and multiple vehicles.

While Mohit Chavda reportedly lives separately from his father following his marriage and had applied independently for housing, critics argue that the application contradicts the eligibility criteria of the scheme, which is designed to assist genuinely underprivileged families.

Responding to media queries, MLA Meghji Chavda said, “When he [my son] applied for a house, I was not serving as an MLA. Moreover, after marriage, Mohit lived separately and needed a home.”

However, records show that both father and son own cars, and questions are being raised over whether Mohit’s application accurately represented his financial status.

Meghji Chavda, elected in 2022 as a BJP legislator from a Scheduled Caste reserved constituency, is now facing mounting pressure from opposition leaders and civil society groups calling for a review of the allotment and possible revocation of the flat.

Officials from Dhrol Municipality have not yet issued a formal statement, but state housing authorities are expected to investigate the matter further.

This is not the first time the PMAY scheme has come under criticism in Gujarat, with activists frequently alleging irregularities and political favoritism in the selection process.
