A major safety scare occurred last night when a portion of the railing on one side of the old Sardar Bridge on National Highway 48 near Bharuch collapsed, leading to panic and a swift response from authorities. The bridge has since been closed for all vehicular traffic.
The old Sardar Bridge, which spans the Narmada River and connects Bharuch to Ankleshwar, had long been restricted to two-wheelers and smaller vehicles due to its deteriorating condition.
However, on Saturday night, a section of the bridge’s railing suddenly gave way, triggering a stampede-like situation among commuters on the bridge at the time.
Upon receiving information about the incident, police teams and officials from the National Highway Authority rushed to the spot. The bridge was immediately cordoned off and closed for all forms of traffic to ensure public safety.
It is important to note that this aging bridge has been in a dilapidated state for years. In response to its declining condition, a modern cable-stayed bridge was constructed nearby as an alternative route. Currently, all major traffic between Delhi and Mumbai is being diverted through the newer cable bridge.
Authorities are assessing the damage and considering the next course of action. Commuters have been advised to use alternate routes and follow traffic updates from local officials.
