With the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections approaching, the implementation of 27% OBC reservation has reshuffled the political map of the city.
Out of 48 wards, 17 wards will now see changes in seat allocation, forcing political parties to field new candidates.
In the 2021 AMC elections, 76 seats were allotted to general category candidates.
Under the new system, this number will fall to 59 seats, divided between male and female candidates. The change has triggered hectic activity among aspirants seeking party tickets in the general category.
The BJP and Congress are expected to face tough challenges as the reservation rotation affects several key wards including Ghatlodiya, Thaltej, Vatva, Asarwa, Shahibaug, Saraspur-Rakhiyal, Khadia, Sarkhej, Makhtampura, Behrampura, Danilimda, Indrapuri, Somnathnagar, Odhav, and Vastral.
Notably, Ghatlodiya ward, which falls under the Chief Minister’s assembly constituency and is represented by the current Deputy Mayor, will now have one seat reserved for OBCs and one for women.
Similarly, in Danilimda ward, one woman’s seat and one man’s seat will be reserved for OBC candidates, reducing the number of general category seats.
Political observers believe that the biggest challenge for parties will be identifying suitable candidates for the reduced general category seats.
Sources within the BJP indicate that corporators facing police complaints or corruption allegations during the current term including one from Ramol ward are unlikely to be repeated in the upcoming polls.
