Struggling to provide basic civic services, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has reportedly spent ₹244 crore over the past 10 years on security personnel and bouncers for officials and premises, with around ₹2 crore spent monthly on these services.
Over 1,800 security personnel and bouncers from around 12 agencies are deployed across the city, including at Kankaria Lakefront, Sabarmati Riverfront, zonal offices, and gardens.
It has been alleged that tenders for these security contracts are structured to favour agencies linked to the ruling party, limiting competition and increasing the financial burden on the corporation.
At the AMC headquarters in Danapith, bouncers are stationed from the main gate to the offices of the municipal commissioner and the mayor, often restricting public access for grievance redressal.
The situation is similar in AMC-run hospitals, where officials reportedly rely on security and bouncers while performing their duties, raising questions about the corporation’s priorities as it struggles to address the city’s basic infrastructure and service needs.
The opposition has sarcastically alleged that due to administrative failures, the AMC has been forced to shield itself from public anger with heavy security, instead of addressing citizens’ concerns.
