Ahmedabad’s liveable city claims have come under scrutiny as citizens continue to struggle with basic civic amenities.

Data reveals that in just 11 months, residents filed 8,10,561 online complaints related to essential services provided by the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC).

Of these, complaints linked to sewer overflows, contaminated water supply, and road works under the engineering department alone stood at 4,57,097, accounting for nearly 50% of the total grievances.

Road-related issues were a major concern, with 96,298 complaints registered against engineering works.

The Central Zone reported the highest distress, where alleged lapses by the engineering department led to 1,38,922 complaints.

Road works emerged as the biggest trigger for public anger. Environmental concerns have also surfaced, with 172 complaints related to poor air quality recorded across the city.

While authorities have announced infrastructure projects worth crores as part of preparations for hosting the Commonwealth Games 2030, ground realities suggest otherwise.

The corporation and its departments have failed to adequately provide basic facilities such as drinking water, sewerage systems, and roads, residents allege.

With the civic body’s term nearing its end, critics say the focus appears to be more on events and publicity-driven programmes rather than resolving persistent civic issues.

Air pollution has emerged as a growing concern alongside routine civic problems, reflecting rising public distress over deteriorating environmental conditions.

Despite repeated reprimands from Gujarat High Court regarding the menace of stray cattle on roads, the situation has seen little improvement. The corporation has received over 17,000 complaints related to stray cattle this year alone.

Similarly, although new gardens have been developed across the city, their maintenance remains a concern.

This has resulted in around 67,000 complaints related to gardens, further questioning the effectiveness of civic management and the credibility of Smart City claims.
