Despite Gujarat’s strict prohibition law, more than 31,000 people have been caught with liquor and beer in Ahmedabad over the past three years.
Government data presented in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly shows that Ahmedabad leads the state in liquor-related offences, followed by Surat with 9,436 cases and Rajkot with 4,258 cases. Vadodara recorded 3,356 such cases during the same period.
In Ahmedabad, the number of cases rose steadily from 9,441 in 2022-23, to 10,735 in 2023-24, and 10,836 in 2024-25, averaging about 30 arrests per day in the latest year.
Officials, however, suggest that the actual figures may be much higher, as many incidents remain unreported.
Within Ahmedabad district, areas reporting significant offences include Daskroi (1,013 cases), Sanand (858), Dholka (761), Viramgam (488), Bavla (397), Mandal (258), Detroj (254), Dhandhuka (217), and East Ahmedabad (209).
The data also reveals that in the past year, Ahmedabad recorded 81 drug-related arrests, 1,354 gambling cases, 95 robberies, 107 murders, and 301 rape cases, underscoring broader law-and-order challenges in the city.
Authorities attribute the rise in liquor offences to factors such as stress, lifestyle pressures, and easy access, noting that enforcement remains a challenge despite the strict legal framework.
