A third terminal is likely to be built at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport in Ahmedabad to handle increasing passenger rush.
According to sources privy to the development, the terminal will cater to domestic passengers.
The city airport is already undergoing expansion and renovation to increase passenger facilities and reduce the turnaround time for transiting passengers.
A new terminal was already on the cards when the Airports Authority of India was managing the airport (AAI), and the peak passenger footfall stood at 1.1 crore in 2019-20. However, the proposal for expansion never saw the light of day.
From April to July i.e., four months of FY 2022-23, some 27.37 lakh passengers passed through the city airport.
Going by this, the projected footfall at the SVPI airport may roughly be around 82 lakh passengers.
Currently, measures are being taken to increase floor space at domestic and international terminals.
