The Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Ahmedabad Crime Branch on Thursday claimed to have seized nearly 7 kg of marijuana, cash amounting to ₹4.9 lakh, mobile phones and a digital weighing scale during a late-evening raid on Wednesday at a residential cluster in Bapunagar.
Three persons, including two women, were detained, while the alleged mastermind, identified as Abdulkadir alias Babu Jawwad Khan Pathan, is absconding.
The raid was conducted around 7.30 pm following a specific tip-off that Abdulkadir, a resident of Bhavani Chowk in Shantinagar, was allegedly selling marijuana from his home with the help of his wife and associates.
When the SOG team reached the narrow lane leading to the accused’s house, officers intercepted a man standing at the corner, who was later identified as Rafiq Sheikh (40).
Inside the house, two women, Sonibanu (27), Abdulkadir's wife, and Sagufa Banu (18), originally from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, were found.
Despite searching the premises, Abdulkadir was not present. During the search, Sonibanu allegedly produced two cloth bags containing marijuana.
A further search across the two upper floors of the house yielded 6.95 kg of marijuana, ₹4.90 lakh in cash (suspected to be proceeds of narcotics sales), four mobile phones with active IMEI numbers, a digital weighing scale and a Hikvision DVR connected to CCTV cameras installed inside the house.
Officials say the presence of CCTV surveillance, mobile chats and cash indicated sustained retail-level narcotics activity. Due to the congested locality and concerns over law and order, officers shifted all seized material and the detained persons to the SOG office for further procedure.
Around 10.40 pm, an FSL mobile unit arrived to conduct a preliminary chemical test, which confirmed the substance to be ganja (cannabis). The total seizure, including contraband, cash, electronics and other items, is valued at approximately ₹8.61 lakh.
SOG officials have registered an offence under sections of the NDPS Act, naming Abdulkadir as the main accused. Efforts are under way to trace him.
