With Diwali around the corner, unrest has erupted in the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) as sanitation workers announced a strike on Tuesday.
The workers are demanding, among other things, an end to outsourcing in sanitation services.
The workers’ union said that despite their demands not imposing any financial burden on the municipal treasury, the administration has failed to take a firm decision.
As a result, all sanitation workers and union members will abstain from duty for a day.
The union also warned that if authorities do not adopt a conciliatory approach, they may be forced to launch an indefinite strike.
Municipal sources said that while the union’s demands include new recruitment and other issues, some of them could have implications for other municipal corporations and municipalities across the state.
The civic body has reportedly also held discussions with the ruling BJP regarding the matter.
