Ahmedabad city registered 381 cases of rape and 222 cases of molestation between February 1, 2022, and January 31, 2023.

The number of rape cases had been the same in the February 1, 2021 to January 31, 2022 period, while the number of molestation cases was 223.

However, the number of rape and molestation cases increased in Ahmedabad district (excluding the city).

Between February 1, 2022, and January 31, 2023, the district saw 74 rape cases and 42 molestation cases.

These numbers were 69 rape cases and 25 molestation cases between February 1, 2021, and January 31, 2022.

In reply to a question by Congress MLA Imran Khedawala, the government gave out further classification of these rape offences.

Of the 381 rape cases between February 1, 2022, and January 31, 2023, in the city, 85 cases were rape 'after promising marriage', 121 were rape 'using the lure of marriage'.

Minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi stated that in 53 cases the girl was raped after being 'trapped in love'.

Of the 381 cases, in 19 cases the girl was raped with the use of force and in 22 cases the rape took place when the girl was alone.

In 15 cases, the rape was carried out after threatening the girl.

In 10 cases, the rape was perpetrated after threatening to slander the victim, in 11 cases the victim was threatened with circulation of photos.

Of the 222 molestation cases, 47 involved the use of force and in 23 cases the perpetrator took advantage of the woman being alone.

Congress leader Amit Chavda said that in eight years, 14,155 cases of crimes against women were registered and in only 231 cases has the accused been convicted.

Sanghavi said that after some cases were registered investigators would realize that the claims of the victim were questionable.

He said that in about 100 cases chargesheets were filed in less than the prescribed amount of time.

He said women in Gujarat are much safer than in states like Rajasthan. He also said that in all these cases, 1,801 persons have been arrested and only 30 accused are absconding.

He said the state has fast track courts. For the Surat rape and murder of a six-year-old girl, the accused was charged and sentenced in about 90 days
