The gold was seized between April 2024 and March 2025.
In April, five smuggling cases were registered and gold worth more than ₹2.5 crore was confiscated.
Although the investigations into the cases registered in April are still ongoing, the gold was seized from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPI), cargo offices, and other places between April and March 2025.
In all such cases, individuals are summoned for questioning, and some have even filed appeals. Over the past five years, the Customs Department has been depositing the seized gold worth crores into the government treasury after following due legal procedures.
Sources in the Customs department clarified that the seized gold is not kept by the department but is deposited with the government. In addition, customs duty, fines, and penalties are also imposed.
In certain cases, where gold worth ₹5 lakh to ₹7 lakh is caught, passengers sometimes pay the duties and penalties to retrieve the gold. Given the continuous rise in gold prices, the value of the gold seized earlier has now increased, which may further encourage gold smuggling.
