On April 17, Ahmedabad experienced its highest maximum temperature of the season at 42.2°C, followed by a record-breaking minimum temperature of 29°C the next day.
To put the figure in perspective, the average temperature for April in the city, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), is 24.1°C.
The surge in temperature has led to a rise in heat-related emergencies during nighttime, according to EMRI officials.
Until 2023, the highest minimum temperature recorded in Ahmedabad in April over the past 40 years (since 1984) was 25.9°C in 2010 - a year marked by scorching heat that led to implementing the Heat Action Plan (HAP).
In comparison, the average minimum temperature in Ahmedabad over the past week was 26.8°C.
On April 18, with temperatures hitting 29°C, it marked the fifth-hottest April night on record.
IMD data reveals that the highest-ever minimum temperature in April was 30°C though the year has not been recorded.
Public health experts caution that while maximum temperatures above 45°C adversely affect humans, night temperatures exceeding 28°C can also pose health risks.
