Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to build percolating wells across Ahmedabad at an expense of over ₹10 crore to address the drainage of rainwater that accumulates during the monsoon season.
The construction of a single percolating well will cost between ₹10 lakh to ₹14 lakh. In a meeting of the Water Committee, it was decided to assign the construction work to five different contractors across different locations.
Percolating wells will be constructed in the ponds located in Chandlodiya and Gota. Dilip Bagaria, chairman of the water and sewerage committee stated that percolating wells will be built at Jagatpur village pond, the pond opposite Western Prime, Oxygen Park pond, near Vandematram, in the garden behind D-Mart, near Gayatri garnala water-logging spot, in the garden near Durga School, at Ognaj pond, Dev City pond, Uma Greenland pond, and at the nursery plot opposite Everest Empire, among other locations prone to rainwater accumulation.
Pipes with a height of 180 to 200 metres will be installed. As part of pre-monsoon activities, percolating wells will be built across the city. This will help alleviate rainwater accumulation issues and raise the groundwater level.
Instructions have been given to build more than 50 percolating wells in different areas before the monsoon season, including five years of operation and maintenance.
A percolating well is basically a type of well where water slowly filters (percolates) down through the soil and rock layers into the underground water table, rather than being directly pumped in or pushed by pressure.
