The number of road accidents in Ahmedabad city in 2021 increased by 21% as compared to the 2020 figures, and the fatalities rose by 19%.

As for the state, in 2021 the number of accidents increased by 13%, up from 13,398 in 2020 and the number of persons killed surged by 21%.

The data tabled by the Union ministry of road transport and highways transport research wing reveals that in Ahmedabad city, the number of accidents increased from 1,185 in 2020 to 1,433 in 2021.

The fatalities spiked from 340 in 2020 to 404 in 2021. In terms of accidents, Ahmedabad city was ranked 14th in 2020 among the 50 million-plus cities of India. In 2021, Ahmedabad city's rank was 11th.

Among other 50 million-plus cities, Rajkot and Vadodara registered a decline in the number of accidents and fatalities, while Surat showed a rise - from 575 accidents in 2020 to 704 in 2021. Also, the fatalities swelled from 191 to 272.

In terms of percentage change of accident-related deaths over 2020, Tamil Nadu with 90.9% and Gujarat with 20.8% growth have recorded figures higher than the national average of 16.9%.
