Houses constructed under the Chief Minister and Prime Minister housing schemes across Ahmedabad have come under scrutiny after it was revealed that tenants are staying in several units instead of the original beneficiaries.

The authorities have issued notices to beneficiaries of 380 houses, while 46 houses have been sealed.

The issue was taken up at a meeting of Amdavad Municipal Corporation’s Housing Committee, where members stated that houses had been illegally rented out in violation of norms.

Questioning why all such houses have not been sealed so far, the committee issued an ultimatum to the administration, directing it to seal all illegally occupied houses within 15 days.

During inspections carried out by the corporation across different housing schemes, action was initiated zone-wise. In the North-West Zone, show-cause notices were issued to 175 houses, of which six houses were sealed.

In the South-West Zone, notices were served on 24 houses and three houses were sealed. In the West Zone, 87 houses were issued notices and 21 houses were sealed.

In the South Zone, notices were issued for 48 houses, following which eight houses were sealed.

Similarly, in the East Zone, notices were served on 46 houses and eight houses were sealed.

As per directions issued by the Housing Committee in the previous term, all houses found to be occupied by tenants instead of original beneficiaries are to be sealed.
