4,000 speed breakers on 3,000 km roads: Ahmedabad’s bumpy obsession turns hazardous

Ahmedabad has an official approval for around 1,200 speed breakers across the city. However, it has more than three times the number – nearly 4,000 – with about 2,800 allegedly built illegally by residents and societies.

Speed breakers are meant for safety, but random construction of bumps on internal roads, main roads and society lanes are causing frequent vehicle damage and even health issues like back and neck pain.

Experts say many of these bumps violate Indian Road Congress guidelines, including height, width and mandatory warning signs. Even AMC-installed breakers often lack proper signage.

Official data shows that in the last 17 months alone, 339 new speed breakers were approved.

However, unauthorised bumps far outnumber legal ones, raising concerns about traffic safety, injuries, and poor road engineering oversight.
