Despite Gujarat’s strict prohibition laws, Panchmahal police have seized a massive consignment of Indian Made foreign liquor (IMFL) worth ₹2,15,35,538 (₹2.15 crore) within just two days, exposing possible lapses in border checks.
Under a special drive, police raided five different locations across the district, recovering a total of 57,850 bottles and beer cans along with several vehicles, including trucks and containers, used to transport the illegal liquor.
The Local Crime Branch (LCB) intercepted a Tata container and seized liquor worth ₹25.66 lakh, containing 2,592 bottles and quarter bottles.
Police recovered 9,180 bottles and quarter bottles valued at ₹74.45 lakh, along with the container, bringing the total seizure here to ₹84.50 lakh. One accused was arrested.
An truck carrying 16,056 quarters and beer cans worth ₹36.84 lakh was seized.
Liquor worth ₹9.18 lakh, including 5,974 bottles and beer cans, was confiscated from an vehicle, and one person was detained.
Police intercepted a consignment of 24,048 bottles and beer cans valued at ₹69.20 lakh, arresting two suspects.
The operations were conducted under the supervision of the Panchmahal-Godhra Range Inspector General of Police and the District Superintendent of Police. Multiple suspects have been booked under the Prohibition Act, and further investigations are underway.
Police suspect that the seized liquor was smuggled in from neighboring states, raising serious questions about the effectiveness of border checkpoints.
How such a large quantity of liquor transported in trucks and containers managed to cross state borders undetected remains unclear.
