In the last five years, 36,626 people have lost their lives in road accidents across Gujarat. Among these, 10,801 were found not wearing helmets, and 5,177 were not wearing seat belts in cars at the time of the accident.

According to the ‘Road Accidents in India, 2022’ report published in 2024, between 2018 and 2022, a total of 80,150 road accidents occurred in the state, resulting in 36,626 deaths.

Not wearing helmets and seat belts has emerged as a major contributing factor in many of these fatalities. In fact, 15,978 people who died in this period were not wearing any protective gear.

Overspeeding has also been a major concern, resulting in 4,685 accidents and 2,342 fatalities.

Moreover, in around 4,915 cases, the drivers did not even possess a valid license. Overloaded vehicles contributed to another 2,342 deaths.

These statistics cover the five years from 2018 to 2022. Since then, the government has not released updated data on road accidents or shared any new figures from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

After the Gujarat High Court’s rebuke, the Ahmedabad police and traffic police have begun a drive against traffic violators in the city. 

In just six days, the Ahmedabad Traffic Police issued a staggering 9,377 challans for wrong-side driving, collecting penalties amounting to over ₹1.59 crore.

The data, compiled between July 17 and 22, 2025, underscores the city’s ongoing battle with traffic indiscipline and highlights the authorities’ intensified crackdown on violators.
