The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday booked social media influencer Orhan Awatramani, popularly known as Orry, and seven others for allegedly consuming liquor in Katra town, which acts as a base camp for pilgrims proceeding for darshan at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in the Trikuta Hills.
The FIR was registered under BNS section 223, which deals with disobedience of an order given by a public servant, at Katra police station.
The Union Territory administration has banned the consumption and sale of liquor and non-vegetarian products in Katra town due to its proximity to the temple.
Police said that the accused on Saturday consumed alcohol within a hotel premises despite being told that liquor was not allowed there.
Police said Reasi SSP Paramvir Singh issued strict instructions to nab the defaulters in order to set an example and underline that there would be no tolerance for drugs or alcohol at religious places.
A team has been constituted to track down the accused, police said.
Meanwhile, sources said that the matter came to light after some photographs went viral on social media, causing resentment in the town.
However, by the time the police swung into action, the accused had already left the hotel and the town, sources said.
The others booked along with Awatramani were Darshan Singh, Parth Raina, Ritick Singh, Rashi Dutta, Rakshita Bhogal, Shagun Kohli, and Anastasia Arzamaskina, police said.
