Schools closed across several districts in Kerala, Karnataka due to heavy rain

Several schools in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu were closed on June 16, due to incessant rainfall in the states.

While in Kerala, heavy rains continued to pound various parts on Sunday, leading to widespread disruptions, including uprooted trees, rising river levels, and the opening of shutters at multiple dams. 

In light of heavy rains, Kerala authorities declared a holiday for educational institutions in Malappuram, Kannur, Kasaragod, Wayanad and Thrissur districts for Monday.

Additionally, the India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Karnataka, leading to school closures in several districts. The district administrations of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada have declared a holiday for all schools on June 16 (today).

Deputy Commissioners have ordered the closure of all educational institutions, including Anganwadis, government, and private schools up to high school level, due to continuous monsoon rains causing waterlogging, flooding, and landslide risks in the area.

Local media reports from Tamil Nadu suggest that due to strong winds and rainfall, schools in Ooty (Udhagamandalam), Kundah, Gudalur, and Pandalur taluks will remain shut today.

As South India is reeling under heavy rainfall, North India is facing severe heat waves. Due to the intense heat, the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Council has extended school closures statewide up to Class 8 until June 30.
