Chhattisgarh High Court condemns physical punishment in schools

The Chhattisgarh High Court has strongly condemned the practice of subjecting children to physical violence in schools under the pretext of discipline or education.

This statement came as the court dismissed a petition filed by Sister Mercy, a teacher accused of abetting the suicide of a Class VI student.

The court deemed such actions as inhumane and a gross violation of the child's right to life and dignity, as enshrined in Article 21 of the Indian Constitution.

Subjecting the child to corporal punishment for reforming him cannot be part of education, a division bench of Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Ravindra Kumar Agrawal said in its order on July 29.
