The Assam government, in a bid to safeguard the cultural heritage and interests of tribal communities, has decided to introduce six tribal languages as mediums of instruction (MoI) in the foundational stage of school education.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the significance of preserving tribal languages by including Rabba, Karbi, Tiwa, Deori, and Dimasa as MoI in the foundational stage.

Sarma, chairing a cabinet meeting at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati, announced the decision, aligning it with the provisions of the National Education Policy, 2020.

He emphasized a gradual transition towards regional languages as MoI, ensuring a balance between cultural preservation and educational advancement.

Furthermore, the Assam cabinet endorsed guidelines for the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan—Nogoria, aiming to empower women through entrepreneurship.

A substantial allocation of Rs. 1000 crore from the budget for FY 2023-24 to the Mega Mission Society – Chief Minister Samagra Gramya Unnayan Yojana (MMS – CMSGUY) was earmarked to support rural women entrepreneurs under the Mukhyamantrir Atmanirbhar Asom Abhiyan (MAAA) and Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Asoni (MMUA) initiatives.

The decision to integrate tribal languages into the educational framework reflects Assam’s commitment to cultural diversity and inclusive education.

Sarma’s emphasis on empowering women through entrepreneurship underscores the government’s efforts towards economic empowerment and rural development.

The allocation of funds for infrastructure projects signifies the state’s focus on enhancing connectivity and facilitating growth across various sectors.
