Atal Bihari Vajpayee cremated with full state honors

One of India's tallest leaders, Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee who passed away on Thursday, August 16 at 5.05 pm was cremated on Friday with full state honors at Smriti Sthal in New Delhi.

As the entire nation plunged into sorrow over the passing away of the former prime minister, the government announced a 7 day mourning from August 16 to 22. Atal Bihari Vajpayee's adopted daughter Namita Bhattacharya performed the last rites of the former Prime Minitser at Smrithi Sthal in New Delhi as Vajpayee, even in death, sends a message by going against the tradition of a male family member performing the duty.

There was massive deployment of police and paramilitary personnel along the entire procession route. The roads to avoid are Krishna Menon Marg, Sunehri Bagh Road, Tughlak Road, Akbar Road, Tees January Marg, Man Singh Road, Bhagwan Dass Road, Shahjahan Road and Sikandara Road. In a rare gesture by a foreign mission in India, the UK High Commission is flying the Union Jack at half-mast to mourn the death of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
