India’s rich cultural heritage took centre stage at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Asian Para Games, as members of the Indian contingent wore ceremonial blazers inspired by the country’s 5,000-year-old civilisation.

The blazers featured motifs and seal designs from the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation, highlighting India’s historical and cultural legacy. The collars also displayed references to Sapta Sindhu, the land of seven rivers, including the significance of the Saraswati River. The national Tricolour was prominently featured on the pocket of the blazers.

Paralympic medallist sprinter Simran Sharma and accomplished badminton player Pramod Bhagat led the Indian contingent as flag bearers during the opening ceremony in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

India has sent a 281-member contingent to the Games, including 168 athletes — 112 men and 56 women — who will compete across 11 sporting disciplines. Around 3,000 athletes from 45 countries are participating in the event, which is scheduled to conclude on October 24, 2026.India will look to build on its impressive performance at the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, where it secured a record 111 medals, including 29 gold, 31 silver and 51 bronze, finishing fifth in the overall medal standings.

The ceremonial attire offered a meaningful blend of sport and culture, allowing India’s athletes to represent not only their sporting ambitions but also the country’s ancient heritage on an international platform.
