Autumn in the Kashmir Valley usually means cool days and a growing chill, but this October has turned the season on its head. Several weather stations recorded record or near-record heat on Sunday, leaving locals and tourists stunned.

Qazigund hit 31.4°C, 7.3 degrees above normal, breaking its 1985 October record of 31.2°C. Kokernag reached 29.4°C, 5.8 degrees above normal, topping its 2008 mark of 29.2°C. Srinagar recorded 31.2°C, the second-highest October temperature in its history, behind only the 1931 all-time high of 33.9°C. Even Gulmarg, known for its cool climate, touched 23.2°C, just shy of its all-time October record of 23.4°C.

The warm spell has also hit farmers. Apple orchards have reportedly suffered damage from the adverse weather, with the industry’s losses estimated at ₹300 to 400 crore. As the valley waits to see how long the heat lasts, debate is growing over whether this is a seasonal blip or a sign of a changing climate.
