Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won her first-ever Asian Games medal on Wednesday, securing silver in the women’s 49kg category at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. She finished with a total lift of 198 kg, including 87 kg in the snatch and 111 kg in the clean and jerk.
North Korea’s Ri Song Gum won the gold medal with a total of 215 kg, while Indonesia’s Luluk Diana Tri Wijayana claimed bronze with 191 kg. Chanu’s silver comes after she narrowly missed the podium at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, where she finished fourth after an injury during her final clean and jerk attempt.
The medal adds an Asian Games honour to Chanu’s already decorated career, which includes an Olympic silver medal, World Championship medals and multiple Commonwealth Games gold medals. Her latest silver also contributed to India’s medal tally at the 2026 Asian Games.
