After the case was registered in Sayajigunj police station the trial was going on and police arrested 19 accused in the case. After nearly 10 years the judgment of the case was ordered by the Vadodara additional sessions judge on Wednesday. He ordered life term to the main accused Jayanti Patelia and the other accused were freed by the court for not having any evidence against them.

“The sensational case of triple murder is based on the precious ruby and during investigation the police arrested 19 accused including the main accused Jayanti Pateliya. The court freed all the other accused and ordered life term to one of them. Since the first day we are talking about the people wrongly framed in the case and that proved today,” said Niraj Jain advocate of one of the accused.

What is the Star Ruby case:-

It all started when Gopal Haryani, a city-based gem dealer, was given a precious stone by a Rajkot gem dealer Samir Jagot who was looking for a buyer. Haryani got the stone valued by experts in Jaipur in November 2006 and was astounded to discover that the stone was actually a rare star ruby, probably worth crores. The stone had been taken to Jaipur by three of his friends—Darshan Thakkar, Jayanti Pataliya and Balkrishna Patel.

Not able to believe their luck, the four decided to get the stone valued again in December 2006. However, Haryani left for Bangkok to attend an expo, where he intended to sell some other gems in his possession. He entrusted his three friends with the responsibility of getting the gem re-valued and left for Bangkok on December 5.

On December 6, Darshan and his brother Mihir Thakkar, Jayanti Pataliya and Balkrishna Patel left from Vadodara for Jaipur in a car. At that time Darshan's father Lalit filed a kidnapping complaint at the Makarpura police station and alleged that his sons were abducted by Patel and Pataliya.

To add to the chaos, Haryani was contacted by the police personnel in Bangkok and he soon returned to Vadodara, where he filed a complaint saying that the four had conspired together and stole the precious gem.

Later on while investigating the matter it was revealed that Jayanti Pateliya with the help of five persons murdered the trio Haryani's employee Darshan Thacker, his brother Mihir and one Balkrishna Patel. The two murderers were arrested from Panchmahals district by the Special operation group (SOG) and while rest five were arrested by the city police.

The police has already arrested owner of the ruby Sameer Jagot and middle-man Gopal Haryani for forging documents and making a fake valuation certificate for the ruby in the name of a prominent Mumbai-based jeweller Chunilal and Company Jewellers (CCJ). However, while Jagot said that he was given the certificate by Haryani, the latter told police that he was handed over the certificate by Jagot.
