Every year, the country celebrates September 15 as National Engineers’ Day to appreciate the contributions of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya – a prolific engineer & an exemplary statesman.

To celebrate this occasion, Western Railway organized a webinar celebration under the aegis of Alok Kansal – General Manager of W. Rly to motivate & encourage all the engineers of WR.

The Chief Guest of this function was the Metro Man of India, Padma Vibhushan & Padma Shri awardee and above all, a true railwayman by heart E. Shreedharan. The Guest of Honour was S.C. Gupta, who is a retired senior officer of Indian Railways Service of Engineering.

According to a press release issued by WR CPRO Sumit Thakur, Bharat Ratna M. Visvesvaraya made several outstanding contributions in the field of engineering and contributed significantly in the development of the nation. To commemorate this historic day, a webinar was conducted by Ajay Goyal – Principal Chief Engineer of W. Rly, who also delivered the welcome address. About 100 participants from the engineering fraternity across Western Railway attended this webinar.

In his Key Note address, Chief Guest E. Sreedharan spoke on Moral Values & Ethics which has to be followed by an engineer. He urged all engineers to replicate Visvesvaraya’s principles and to follow his footsteps in the service of the nation and to always ensure excellence & best quality. E. Shridharan is credited for changing the face of public transport in India with his leadership in building the Konkan Rly & the Delhi Metro.

S. C. Gupta in his address stressed upon the need for thinking, enthusiasm & being focused which are the vital qualities essential in an engineer. It’s worth mentioning that S.C. Gupta has also wrote a book on “Repairs and Rehabilitation of FOBs & ROBs in coastal area”. He had been associated with various Zonal Rlys and was instrumental in construction of 1.8725 Km long THANE CREEK BRIDGE and Panval viaduct with 65M tall piers . Both these bridge & Panvel viaduct which were awarded as “Most Outstanding Structure of India” award by American Concrete Institute.

Western Rly’s General Manager Alok Kansal in his address, emphasized on quality consciousness with personal example, which are the prerequisites for building the nation for a better tomorrow. It’s also pertinent to mention that Alok Kansal had been associated with introduction of first Shatabdi Express.

As a Construction Engineer, he has executed number of important projects of Gauge conversion & Doubling projects. He was actively involved in policy making at Railway Board covering all subjects of Civil Engineering.

He has also been instrumental in enhancing the production of long rails & has also authored two books “A-Z for Quality Control and Inspection of Concrete Sleepers” and “Learning The First Step By A Railway Engineer”, which are practical guide for all field Engineers of Indian Railways.

After speeches, the event was followed by brief presentations as well as felicitation of the Guests with mementos. On this occasion, in a power point presentation, various achievements & contributions of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya were also displayed.

Thakur stated that Western Rly paid rich tributes to the prolific engineer as well as this great son of India Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. Western Rly also salutes the talented & skilled engineers of our country, who have contributed significantly in the development of our nation.
