Following a tragic strike a week ago, the UAE's defence ministry said it intercepted and destroyed two Houthi ballistic missiles aimed at the Gulf country on Monday, with no casualties.

Yemen's Houthis have been fighting a Saudi-led coalition, which includes the UAE, for more than six years, conducting cross-border missile and drone assaults on Saudi Arabia, as well as an unprecedented assault on the UAE on January 17.

In Yemen, the coalition has carried out fatal air attacks in the past week, claiming to be intended at destroying the capabilities of the Iran-aligned organisation in a confrontation that is widely viewed as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

On Monday, a Houthi military spokesman stated the group fired Zulfiqar ballistic missiles against the US-run al-Dhafra airbase in Abu Dhabi, as well as other "vital targets." He went on to say that the group had launched drones in Dubai.

The UAE military ministry claimed that fragments of the intercepted missiles landed in different regions near Abu Dhabi, and that it was taking the required precautions to avoid assaults.

It later shared a video of an F-16 warplane demolishing a Houthi missile launcher near Yemen's al-Jawf at 1:10 a.m. GMT, which the group had employed in the operation, on Twitter.

Newspaper in the United Arab Emirates Residents in Abu Dhabi reported seeing fireworks in the sky at 12:30 a.m. GMT, according to The National.

The protest on Monday was the UAE's second since a strike on a gasoline storage in Abu Dhabi last week, which killed three people and caused a fire near the country's international airport.

In early trading, the Dubai benchmark stock index was down 1%, while the Abu Dhabi stock index was down 0.7 percent. The United Arab Emirates is the region's business and tourism center.

Monday's operation, according to a Houthi military official, also targeted "critical" sites in southern Saudi Arabia.

The coalition intercepted a missile, according to Saudi official media, with remains inflicting damage in a southern industrial sector. Images purporting to show the projectiles' winged remains, as well as the twisted metal of automobiles and structures, were broadcast by state media.

A ballistic missile dropped in another location in the south on Sunday night, injuring two foreigners and causing damage to an industrial area, according to state television.

The UN, which has been working with the US to broker a truce in Yemen, has expressed alarm over the escalation and urged all parties to exercise greatest caution.
