Vadodara Institute of Neurological Sciences (VINS) starts Movement Disorders Clinic from this month to treat patients. These are neurological disorders in which patients have abnormally slow or excess movements of body parts. As the awareness is low the first ever clinic in the city will reach out to patients to give them timely treatment before it get severe.

Parkinsonism, tremor, chorea, dystonia, myoclonus, tics, or complex combinations of these are some of the examples of this disorder. The clinic will be headed by Dr. Suvorit Bhowmick, MD (Medicine), DM (Neurology) and specializes in the management of such patients who often require advanced treatment in the form of Botulinum Toxin Therapy and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) programming.

He was a Fellow of the University of Toronto (Canada) from January, 2019 to August, 2020. There he received training under the mentorship of the worldleading experts in the field of Movement Disorders. Through his expertise the VINS team is committed to make high-quality care available to the patients in this part of the country, locally.

This is the first dedicated ‘Movement Disorders Clinic’ to be established in the state of Gujarat, offering specialised treatments like DBS and Botulinum Toxin Therapy. Until now, patients needing the same had to seek treatment at Mumbai or Hyderabad, causing a lot of inconvenience and very high cost of
therapy. The Movement Disorders Clinic at VINS Hospital shall offer these treatment options locally and at very reasonable costs.

Dr. Bhowmick said, any age group can suffer with this disorder and it is purely related to brain and spinal cord. The movement disorder sometimes take years to recognize and valuable time is lost till the patient reaches the neurosurgeon. The treatment start from diognise, cause finding and treatment. Music, physiotherapy, exercise, swimming, dance classes also are some of the treatment other than surgery.

He further added the the awareness is low and needs to be spread among people. The treatment is costly but as awareness spreads it will be cost friendly for the patients.
