Values this experience as an extraordinary and useful lesson in disaster management
The cyclone Tautae striked in Gujarat had its effect in all the entire state. Vadodara also witness strong winds of 70 to 80 kmph and moderate rainfall and there was sign of tension on everyone faces about the imlact.
At that time, an engineer from Vadodara Dilip Shah had an extraordinary experience of meeting Tautae with his colleagues on the platform of an oil well in the middle of sea. When he shared this experience with his wife, she was terrified and Dilip was narrating the events like an interesting story. This was a unique paradox.
Engineer Dilip Shah had a lot of experience working in the middle of the sea for the last 17 years. He has often seen small and big sea storms, but for the first time he witness a cyclone of such a large scale. He said, this was the greatest experience of his entire 37-year service career.
He have various experiences from the oil field and then came work at sea. For more than a decade and a half, he have been at sea when such a situation arises. All precautionary measures were taken as all the warnings were received in advance and they were very safe.
However for Tautae he said it to be an incredibly extraordinary experience. He has learned a lot in disaster management which will be very useful in teaching the new generation after retirement this year and also a new direction on how to deal with such a disaster in civic life.
Describing the situation at the time of Tautae he said, it started in the midnight with winds of about 90 to 120 nautical miles, or about 185 to a maximum of 215 kmph. Visibility was almost zero at that time. Let's say they enjoyed this Life Long Experience with so much excitement as their platform is very strong and secure.
The place where he work is located in the lap of Arabian Sea about 90 km from the coast. Especially in monsoons, they faced small and big sea storms. On a typical day, it is not surprising that the wind blows at 15 to 20 nautical miles and the waves bounce. If the wind speed increases from 40 nautical miles, then there is a permanent instruction not to go out. As soon as they got the warning of this cyclone, they took precaution including tying all the equipment very tightly.
However, for the first time, he saw waves as high as 8 meters or in other words a two- to three-story building in Tautae. The storm continued from midnight until the evening of the next day. Now the sea is calm, as if nothing had happened.
He is working on 15 days a month in the sea and his wife Anita and children have instinctively accepted this business risk. Small and big storms do not make them tense but since this storm is so widespread it is natural for them to feel a little nervous. But Dilip reassured them of all the details in advance and also signaled that communication would be cut off for about twenty-four hours. Inspite of that the whole family, friends and relatives living in the country and abroad were definitely very worried till they get in contact with him.
It can be said that Dilipbhai's job is a very exciting job. Not everyone gets a chance to do such a job. Due to this opportunity to work in the open sea, they have been able to enjoy the scary calamity of Tautae from the foreground. It is their courage and liveliness that makes them consider this once-in-a-lifetime experience of the storm to be one of life's most extraordinary.
