While the Tesla Model 3 may be the world's most popular electric vehicle, the Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV is giving the compact sedan a run for its money in China, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). Apart from its size, the tiny EV outsold the Tesla Model Y in 2021 by a large margin.

The Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV ended 2021 on a strong note in China, with 395,451 units sold. Since June 2020, the company has sold more than 500,000 units, indicating a 7 percent year-over-year increase. This Chinese firm sold more little electric vehicles than Tesla, which sold a total of 320,743 units.

According to the CPCA, the Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV was the sole car to register more than 50,000 units in December 2021. In December 2021, the tiny electric hatchback set a new monthly record in China, selling 50,561 units, a 42.9 percent year-on-year increase.

With 187,227 units sold in China in 2021, the BYD Qin was the second most popular electric vehicle. With 150,890 units sold, Tesla Model 3 came in third. The Tesla Model Y, on the other hand, led the electric SUV and crossover sector with 169,853 units shipped last year.

Despite the fact that the Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV is a small car that can't be compared to the Model 3 or Model Y, its accessibility and affordability have made it popular in China, the world's largest market for electric vehicles.

SAIC, GM, and Wuling, a joint venture amongst automobile firms, sold a total of 60,372 electric vehicles in China in December 2021, setting another another record in the country's EV market.
