New Update

Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe has tapped former captain Arjuna Ranatunga to lead an interim committee overseeing Sri Lanka cricket.

Local news reports state that the move comes in the wake of a series of losses that have drawn intense scrutiny of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board.

Joining Ranatunga are retired Supreme Court Justices M I M Imam and Rohini Marasinghe, retired High Court Justice Iranganie Perera, as well as Upali Dharmadasa, Rakitha Rajapaksa, and Hisham Jamaldeen.

Under Sri Lanka's own Sports Law, however, the government has the power to dissolve the governing body of any sport - a power it has used several times on SLC in the last 20 years.

The dissolution was precipitated by Sri Lanka's exit from the ongoing men's World Cup. Arjuna Ranatunga had led the Sri Lankan side to World Cup victory in 1996.
