The sound of the word freedom fighter fills our hearts with overwhelming respect and grief at the same time.

These were the people who fought for the freedom of our country. During that period, it was only men that came out of their homes and sacrifice everything in the name of the country. To everyone’s surprise andpreconceived notions, there were a few women who had decided to step out of their homes, leave behind their homely duties of being a mother, daughter, wife, sister and become a freedom fighter.

There were few notable women, who stood up for the rights of the people against oppression from outsiders, they fought for the rights of women and described themselves to be equal to men. These few women made a huge mark on history

  1. Sarojini Naidu: She was known by the sobriquet as the Nightingale of India. Sarojini Naidu was the second woman to become the president of the Indian National Congress in the year 1925. She traveled to different regions and delivered lectures on social welfare, nationalism and was an advocate of women empowerment.
  1. Rani Lakshmi Bai: Lakshmi Bai was the queen of Jhansi, married to the king of Jhansi, GangadharRao in the year 1842. She was named Manikarnika at birth but later adapted to the name of Rani Lakshmi Bai. As a child, she was rebellious and was not the quintessential girl who liked playing with dolls. She trained as a fighter from her childhood days and later became one of the leaders of the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
  1. Kasturba Gandhi: Kasturba Mohandas Gandhi famously recognized as the wife of the father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhi. She was a political activist and fought for the civil rights and the Indian Independence. She was arrestedand then sentenced to three months of hard labor in prison. Kasturba Gandhi acted on behalf of Mahatma Gandhi whenever he was arrested.
  1. Kamala Nehru: She was a freedom fighter and the mother of Indira Gandhi. She organized groups of women in Allahabad and encouraged people not to buy or sell foreign clothing and liquor. She was involved in the struggle for Indian Independence and was a popular figure among the women.
  1. Indira Gandhi: Born as Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi, she was the fourth prime minister of India, also the first woman prime minister of India. She went to war with Pakistan as shewas a supporter of the independence movement of India. She was named the “Woman of the Millenium” by the BBC in 1999.

The above mentioned women were advocates of women empowerment. They were examples of great valor and sacrifice to have left behind a normal life to fight for the country.
