This Independence Day will mark a historic first at the iconic Red Fort, as the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ will be sung during the August 15 celebrations.This year’s Independence Day theme will also focus on the contribution of young Indians towards building a developed India by 2047, putting youth at the centre of the celebrations.
The song will be performed as Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives at the Red Fort. He will subsequently unfurl the national flag and deliver his customary Independence Day address to the nation, according to the Defence Secretary.The historic rendition comes as 2026 marks 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’, penned by renowned Bengali litterateur Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. Defence Secretary R K Singh said the song will be sung from the ramparts of the Red Fort for the first time as a tribute to its enduring legacy.
Meanwhile, the BJP has intensified its campaign around the national song, arguing that ‘Vande Mataram’ deserves the same respect as the national anthem, ‘Jana Gana Mana’. The party has also advocated singing all six stanzas of the song, instead of the traditional practice of performing only two stanzas.
A 150-year-old national song, a historic Red Fort debut and a youth-focused vision for 2047 — Independence Day 2026 is set to carry a strong message of heritage and India’s future.
