Ramesh Chennithala has been elected as the new opposition leader of the Kerela Assembly. The decision was taken at the Congress Legislature party meeting held on Sunday.

It was announced after a Congress Legislature party meeting in Thiruvananthapuram which stretched for several hours.Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit attended meeting as representative of the central leadership.

Sheila Dikshit said at a press conference that Mr Chennithala's election was "unanimous".The decision is approved by AICC chief Sonia Gandhi.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy proposed the name of Mr Chennithala and three other MLAs supported him. UML leader PK Kunhalikutty would be the Deputy Leader of UDF in the House

59-year-old Mr Chennithala began his political career as a leader of party students' wing KSU in 1970s. He is a former KPCC chief and held the Home portfolio in Chandy government.

Mr Chennithala is a four-time member of Parliament and member of Legislative Assembly. He said "The new position was a challenging task as Congress is not in power both in the state and at the Centre"
