Shrinking Winters Raise Alarm for Crops and Climate in Gujarat.

From villages to megacities, Gujarat is witnessing an unusually mild winter in 2025, with the much-anticipated seasonal chill largely absent even as December nears its end, raising serious questions about changing climate patterns. Despite early forecasts predicting an early onset of cold, temperatures across the state have remained above normal, with not a single city—except Naliya—recording a dip below 10°C so far this season

Even Naliya, traditionally Gujarat’s coldest location, has seen its average temperature rise by 2°C compared to last year, while Rajkot has warmed by 2°C and Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara by around 1°C each. The number of cold days has also declined sharply, with major cities recording fewer instances of temperatures below 15°C, highlighting a clear reduction in winter intensity.

Weather experts attribute this trend to weak and delayed Western Disturbances, resulting in reduced snowfall in the Himalayas and limited southward movement of cold air. According to Skymet Weather Vice President Mahesh Palawat, winters that once lasted nearly two months are now shrinking to barely 30 days—and this year, possibly even less—mirroring similar patterns across North India.

The warming trend, he warns, is a strong indicator of climate change and poses serious risks to agriculture, especially Rabi crops, as shorter winters could lead to earlier and more intense summer heat.
