Heavy Rains Disrupt Wedding Season in Gujarat; Roads Flooded in Surat, Ankleshwar and Chhota Udepur as Three Weather Systems Remain Active.
Unseasonal heavy rains lashed south and central Gujarat early on February 20, 2026, triggering waterlogging, traffic chaos and disruption to peak wedding celebrations across key districts. Intense showers accompanied by thunder and lightning hit cities including Surat, Ankleshwar, Vadodara, Panchmahal, Dahod and Chhota Udepur, catching residents off guard.
In Surat, several roads were submerged, vehicles crawled through waterlogged stretches, and low-lying areas faced flooding that paralysed morning movement. The sudden downpour drenched open-air wedding mandaps and event venues, forcing organisers into last-minute damage control as decorations, tents and fair domes were soaked.
Beyond urban disruption, the rain has raised alarm bells in agricultural belts, where farmers fear losses to near-harvest rabi crops such as wheat and gram due to excess moisture and potential pest attacks.
Meteorologists attribute the abrupt weather swing to a rare combination of three active systems — a Western Disturbance over northwest India, a trough extending from north Gujarat into Rajasthan, and supportive cyclonic circulations intensifying cloud formation.
While skies may clear intermittently, breezy winds of 30–40 km/h and isolated showers could persist in pockets over the next few days, keeping Gujarat on edge as both celebratory and farming communities brace for further uncertainty.
