MSU Baroda professor and PhD student get patent for invention in Lactol Derivatives as Mosquitocidal Compounds. This work was carried out in Applied Chemistry Department, Faculty of Technology & Engineering, by Prof Pradeep T Deota (Guide) and Dr Gautam Patel (PhD student). The title of the patent is
Lactol Derivatives as Mosquitocidal Compounds and granted on 20th April 2021.

Mosquitoes are responsible for vector-borne diseases such as malaria, filariasis and dengue. In this patent, we have reported a series of chemical compounds having excellent mosquitocidal activity comparable with existing commercial products. These compounds possess much lesser cytotoxicity (toxicity to humans) as against existing commercial products such as pyrethroids, organochlorine and organophosphorus compounds.

The lactol derivatives reported in this patent were evaluated for their mosquitocidal activity on Anopheles Culicifacies using standard WHO specified adult susceptibility test and tunnel test. All the compounds exhibited excellent mosquitocidal activity.

Further all these compounds when tested for their cytotoxicity on human lung cell line were found to be much less toxic to human body than existing mosquitocidal compounds belonging to pyrethriod, organochlorine, organophosphorous class.
