With the motto of serving the humanity and countrymen with compassion, W.Rly’s Commercial department has put its best foot forward for enabling supply and distribution of meals to the poor and needy persons during crisis of global Covid19 pandemic.

The Commercial warriors of Western Rly are playing an active role in the Mission social responsibility. The Commercial department is getting these meals prepared through various agencies like IRCTC, NGOs, Local Swayamsevi Sanstha, Catering/Handling Contractors, Religious Organizations, Railway Staff Associations and other good Samaritans.

According to a press release issued by WR CPRO Ravinder Bhakar, Commercial Department of Western Railway is ensuring its best possible efforts to arrange smooth distribution of food packets & meals to needy persons in the nearby areas of several stations in all the 6 divisions of WR. In order to distribute the meals, local authorities were contacted by divisions to check the requirement for ferrying meals to various locations. This distribution is being done through brave Commercial Staff like Ticket Checkers, Booking Clerks & Commercial Inspectors.

On an average daily 40-50 commercial staff readily shouldered the noble but risky task in these difficult times albeit use of protective masks and sanitization. While delivering the food to needy persons, social distancing and hygiene aspects are being observed minutely by all concerned.

During the period from 29th March, 2020 to 2nd May, 2020, Mumbai Central division’s commercial staff has distributed 28,840 meal packets through various NGOs to housekeeping staff, parcel loaders and onduty staff at Vapi station, Jagjivan Ram Hospital patients, attendants and IOW & Coaching depot staff of Mumbai Central and also to the workers who were engaged in the recently undertaken regirdering work of bridge between Bandra and Mahim over Mumbai Division.

In Ahmedabad division, 1,00,875 food packets were distributed to needy persons while Vadodara division had distributed 47,975 food packets through Akshay Patra Foundation in Vadodara city and at Nadiad goods shed whereas 9,228 food packets were distributed by Rly local staff and NGOs at Porbandar, Sihor and Bhavnager over Bhavnagar division.

Similarly, 10,152 meal packets were distributed by Rajkot division at Jamnagar, Surendra Nagar, Wankaner and Hapa with the help of Sai Seva Trust, Jalaram Seva Trust and Reliance Industries Ltd and 6,425 food packets were distributed at different stations over Ratlam division. To sum up, the Commercial Department, W. Rly has distributed 2,03,495 free meals to needy persons, in addition to 2,31,377 free meals supplied by IRCTC through NGOs, during last 35 days of lockdown in the country.

In addition to this, the Ministerial staff of Commercial Department at Vadodara DRM Office collected a sum of Rs. 8000/- while the Ticket Checking staff, Vadodara division contributed a sum of Rs 11,111/- and was donated to Swaminarayan temple, Atladra for preparing food packets to be handed over to VMC for distribution of approx 800 packets in the evening.
