[:en]While transporting money from Salem to Chennai robbery of Rs 5.75 took place. As per the sources the RBI was transporting Rs 342 crore worth used currency notes from Salem to Chennai on three special coaches of Salem –Chennai Egmore Express train.

Robbers made a hole using gas cutters , and took 5.75 crore, belonging to the Reserve Bank of India from a train in Tamil Nadu Monday night.

As per the sources robbers entered in the train by cutting an opening on the roof of one of the coaches where boxes containing the currency were kept.

The incident came to light after the train from Salem arrived this morning and some of the more than 200 boxes carrying the cash and transported through three cargo coaches of the train were found tampered with.

The Railway Protection Force has registered a case. Multiple teams were sent to the stations where the train had stopped during the seven hour journey.

Initial probe indicates that the robbery took place at Virudhachalam, where the train had been running slow and halted for almost an hour.[:]
