Amidst a noticeable surge in stomach flu cases in the national capital, healthcare professionals have reported an increase in patients seeking medical attention for flu-like symptoms, diarrhea, and viral fever.
Stomach flu, or viral gastroenteritis, is a common illness caused by various viruses like norovirus, rotavirus, and enteroviruses, known for their high contagiousness.
The rise in cases has prompted health experts to emphasize the importance of precautions and highlight that antibiotics are ineffective against these viral infections.
Dr. Rajeev Gupta, Director of Internal Medicine at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, mentioned observing an average of 6-7 stomach flu cases per day.
He emphasized that antibiotics should not be employed unless a bacterial infection is present, as they are ineffective against viruses causing stomach flu.
Individuals with weakened immune systems, young children, and older adults are considered more vulnerable to severe complications like dehydration and malnutrition from the stomach flu.
Those with comorbidities such as diabetes and hypertension, along with individuals with a recent travel history, are also at increased risk.
