Cholera Outbreak in India: 2 Cases reported from Gujarat and Kerala

With monsoon season in full swing, two states in India have recently reported a cholera outbreak.

Two cases were detected from Gujarat and an area in a 2-kilometre radius as been declared as cholera-affected area.

This was declared under the Epidemic Diseases Act on July 5th, as per reports.

The second state that reported cholera outbreak this week is Kerala.

As per recent reports, two cases have been confirmed and 22 people are exhibiting symptoms of the disease. Officials suspect that the these 22 people also may have been infected.

 Cholera is acute diarrhoeal infection which spreads through water and food contamination. It is caused by Vibrio cholerae.

The immediate and the most noticeable symptoms of cholera are acute diarrhoea, vomiting and dehydration.

The Rajkot Municipal Corporation in Gujarat said to the media that according to the reports from their preliminary investigation, the infection may have spread from water brought in from sources outside the state.

The revealed that the water may have already been contaminated.

Officials say that, there is a possibility that the infection may have spread from water used to store fish in houses before they are sold in markets. 

The fishes, brought in from other places are stored in the water for a few days.

The water that the fish was stored in may have gotten contaminated causing the outbreak in Rajkot. 

The corporation has banned the manufacturing of all food items made of ice till September 4 for extra precaution.
