We're here to help you if you've been living in a cave and don't know what the keto diet is. Only high-fat, moderate-protein, and extremely low-carbohydrate foods are allowed on the Keto diet. Carbohydrates are, as you may know, your body's preferred source of energy. Going on a full-fledged keto diet, on the other hand, eliminates this favoured energy source. The keto diet may experience various negative effects as a result of this.

What exactly is a ketogenic diet?

The ketogenic diet induces a metabolic state known as ketosis in the body. This is when your body begins to break down the fat you've deposited into small molecules. When your body need energy to function, these will be used. As a result, your body's fat deposits will be reduced.

The keto diet is not a one-size-fits-all eating plan, as stringent as it may appear. While on a keto diet, you must ensure that you are getting all of the required nutrients. Skin, like the rest of your body, is your largest organ and requires nutrients. Ladies, it can't just eat your pricey serum and unique cream!

How does a ketogenic diet affect your skin and hair?

Dr. Anupriya Goel, Dermatologist and Medical Director of the Berkowits Clinics chain, spoke with HealthShots about the implications of a fiber-free keto diet on skin and hair health.

"Keto diet leads to quick, temporary weight loss. This stress of losing weight quickly, slashing protein and intake of key nutrients which promote healthy hair can lead to excessive shedding of hair (telogen effluvium). It is a condition which also happens post pregnancy which may cause excessive hair fall," says Dr Goel.

In addition to this, Delhi-based nutritionist Kavita Devgan says, "Keto can lead to better skin and hair in the short run but in the long run it may affect the gut bacteria negatively. It may lead to severe deficiencies and that may impact the skin and gut negatively. A connection between skin rashes and breakouts and keto has been found out as well."

Micro and macro nutrients, vitamins, and fatty acids nourish your skin. It can only obtain them if you consume a sufficient amount of these in your diet. Unfortunately, a keto diet has the first effect on your skin, hair, and nails. To keep the body alive, your body transfers the majority of critical nutrients to your heart, brain, and liver. These vitamin shortages manifest themselves in your skin and hair long before you lose a pound!

Traditionally, the keto diet was only used to treat epilepsy and seizures in children. However, the keto diet is now widely used to manage obesity and weight problems. Keto diet foods include cheese, poultry, avocados, almonds, fish, and shellfish. Grains, high-sugar fruits, baked goods, chips, and crackers, on the other hand, are not considered keto-friendly foods.

Whatever the case may be, a ketogenic diet has promising benefits, but you won't be able to maintain it over time. Furthermore, the long-term effects of keto might be rather frightening. So, before you jump on the keto train, consult a dietician to help you devise a strategy. Stick to your plan and communicate with your expert at all times.
