Kalicharan Maharaj was detained by the Raipur Police for disparaging Mahatma Gandhi and praising Nathuram Godse for assassinating the nation's father. In Khajuraho, he was apprehended.

Prashant Agarwal, the Raipur SP, stated, "Kalicharan Maharaj was residing in a rented room near Bageshwar Dham in Madhya Pradesh, some 25 kilometres from Khajuraho. He was apprehended by Raipur Police around 4 a.m. today. The police squad would arrive in Raipur with the accused by late evening."

On the allegation of former Raipur mayor Pramod Dubey, a FIR was filed against Kalicharan Maharaj at Tikrapara police station in Raipur.

Sections 505(2) [Statements generating or promoting enmity, animosity, or ill will amongst classes] and 294 [obscene act in any public place] of the IPC have been filed against Kalicharan.

On Sunday, speaking at the Dharam Sansad held at Ravan Bhata ground in Raipur, Kalicharan Maharaj alleged that "the target of Islam is to capture the nation through politics."

He also said, "I salute Nathuram Godse that he killed Gandhi."

Kalicharan Maharaj's remark at Raipur Dharam Sansad occurred just days after a religious gathering in Haridwar made news for aggressive and divisive speeches made by Hindu religious leaders during the occasion against minority communities.
