New Update

People acquainted with the development told HT that the Union Cabinet is likely to address the repeal of the three contentious farm legislation at a meeting on Wednesday. They also intimated that during the Winter Session, the Cabinet will discuss the presentation of a new measure to remove the three laws.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced his government's intention to drop the three agriculture legislation during his address to the nation on the occasion of Guru Parab on Friday.

During the Monsoon Session of Parliament in 2020, the government introduced the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020. Hundreds of thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh gathered at Delhi's border for nearly a year after the regulations were passed, asking that they be repealed.

Farmers' unions indicated earlier in the day at a conference near Delhi's Tikri border that the protests will go on as planned, including the Kisan Mahapanchayat in Lucknow on November 22 and the tractor march to Parliament on the first day of the Winter Session on November 29.

The demand for a minimum support price (MSP) committee, the dismissal of cases, and the cancellation of unpaid power bills would continue, according to the farmer leaders at the Singhu border. "We'll write an open letter to the Prime Minister." It would highlight pending demands such as the MSP committee, its rights, time period, and responsibilities; the Electricity Bill 2020; and the withdrawal of charges against farmers. Following the meeting, farmer leader Balbir Singh Rajewal was cited by news agency ANI as saying, "We'll also write to him to dismiss the minister involved to the Lakhimpur Kheri incident."
