Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Mauritius counterpart Pravind Kumar Jugnauth jointly inaugurated the India-assisted Social Housing Units project in Mauritius through video conferencing last evening. They also launched the Civil Service College and 8MW Solar PV Farm projects in Mauritius that are being undertaken under India's development support.

Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Modi said, India and Mauritius are united by history, ancestry, culture, language, and the shared waters of the Indian Ocean.

He said our robust development partnership has emerged as a key pillar of our close ties. Mauritius is a prime example of India's approach to development partnership which is based on the needs and priorities of our partners and respects their sovereignty.

Mr Modi in his speech said that under India's Vaccine Maitri programme, Mauritius was one of the first countries where COVID vaccines were sent. The Prime Minister recalled that during his Mauritius visit in 2015 he had outlined India's maritime cooperation vision of SAGAR - 'Security and Growth for All in the Region'.

During my 2015 visit, I had outlined India's maritime cooperation vision of SAGAR -Security and Growth for All in the Region. I am glad that our bilateral cooperation, including in maritime security, has translated this vision into action. Despite the constraints of COVID, we were able to hand over a Dornier aircraft on lease.

Mr Modi also remembered the stellar contribution of the late Sir Anerood Jugnauth in strengthening India-Mauritius ties.

Speaking at the event, Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth said the projects launched will contribute significantly to the development of his country.

An Agreement on extending a 190 million dollar Line of Credit from India to Mauritius for the Metro Express Project and other infrastructure projects was also exchanged. An MoU on the implementation of Small Development Projects was also exchanged.
