New Update

US-based Micron Technology on Saturday held the groundbreaking ceremony for its $2.75 billion (Rs 22,540 crore) chip assembly and test facility in India.

Micron's assembly, testing, marking and packaging (ATMP) facility will come up in the Sanand GIDC-II industrial estate on 93 acres of land, and is expected to be commissioned in 18 months.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held in the presence of Union information technology and railways minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union MoS for electronics and information technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar and Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel among others.

The computer storage chip manufacturer will now begin construction of its semiconductor plant.

The facility will focus on transforming wafers into ball grid array (BGA) - integrated circuit packages, memory modules and solid-state drives.

An initial investment of $875 million will go into the establishment of the plant in two phases.

The remaining investment will be supported by the state and central governments.

The combined investment is projected to create around 5,000 direct jobs and 15,000 community job opportunities over the next five years.

Construction of Phase 1 will include a 5 lakh square feet clean room space, scheduled to be operational by late 2024.

The factory will be designed in accordance with LEED gold standards of the Green Building Council and will integrate advanced water-saving technologies, enabling a zero liquid discharge system.
